No smells in new garbage removal system

A new garbage disposal system to be installed in the center of the Expo site will remove the need for dirty and smelly garbage trucks to pick up rubbish during the running of the World Expo in 2010.

Under a recently published plan on city’s sanitation, the new garbage disposal arrangement, called the Pneumatic Conveying System, will transfer garbage in fully enclosed conditions without any need manual operations. This will ensure that the process of garbage collection is non-smelly and without any spillage.

The system, a Swedish invention, has been on a trial in a residential estate in Shanghai’s Songjiang District since the beginning of the year.

When the new collection system is operating, litter bins and garbage collection stations are linked by underground pipes. The smell of the garbage is extracted and purified before being released into the air while the garbage itself is compressed inside containers.

The garbage disposal center located outside the Expo site will become a recycling centre.

The garbage collection plan also contains detailed suggestions covering other sanitary requirements around the Expo site and prearrangements for emergencies.

The Shanghai Design Institute on Environmental Sanity Engineering, which authorized the plan, said that as well as the new idea on garbage disposal, the plan also emphasized the need for energy efficiency and water conservation. The plan suggested using the water in the Huangpu River to flush toilets and to use solar energy for the Expo lighting system.
