The World Expo 2010 Shanghai China Theme Song should
embody the concept of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, that is:
“understanding, communication, gathering and co-operation” from around the
world. It should embody the theme of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China
—“Better City, Better Life”, and also the
sub-themes: “Blending of Multiple Cultures in the City; Prosperity of Urban
Economy; Innovation of Science and Technology in the City; Promotion of
Harmonious Urban Communities; and Interaction between Cities and
Villages”.
I. Organization
The World Expo 2010 Shanghai China Theme Song
Solicitation & Collection (Theme Song Solicitation & Collection) has
been organized by the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China Committee (WESCOC). The
World Expo 2010 Shanghai Theme Song Solicitation & Collection Office (Theme
Song Collection Office) is in charge of the collection, judging and
popularization of the songs.
II. Scope
The Theme Song Solicitation & Collection for 2005
began on May 7, 2005. The deadline is 18:00 (Beijing Time) on
September 30, 2005(according to the time when entries arrive in the collection
office no matter how it was submitted). The rules are applicable for all entries
submitted before the deadline. The rules of collection and criteria of judging
for the Theme Song Solicitation & Collection in later years will be
published at another time.
III. Eligibility
All individuals, companies, enterprises, institutes or
other organizations and groups from home and abroad (including regions) with a
supportive interest in the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China can make a submission
in the name of an individual or group. The lyrics and music combined will be
considered as entries. A writer of entries is called “the author”. The entrant,
the one who fills and signs the Application Form, should be one of the group’s
authors.
Sponsors (including their employees), the Theme Song
Collection Office’s staff members and judges are ineligible.
IV. Methods of submission
1. Entry fee is free.
2. Entries can only be submitted either by postal mail or
delivery.

V. Requirements and Introduction
1. The activity is divided into lyrics collection and
song collection (including lyrics and music). The two parts are both considered
entries.
1) Entry of song should comprise materials as
follows:
A. Ten copies of the written materials which include
music sheets and lyrics. The music sheets should be in the form of numbered
musical notation or staves, explaining how the song should be sung or performed.
The lyrics should be written in Chinese and English and written under the
corresponding notes.
B. One audio copy of entries which can be only recorded
in the medium of cassette, CD, CD-R, MD or DAT. The length of each entry should
be from 2.5 minutes to 5 minutes.
2) Entry of lyrics should include ten copies of Chinese
or English lyrics.
3) All copies should clearly indicate the title.
Information about the author (no matter whether individual or group) is not
allowed to be revealed on the entries. Such information should be entered in the
Application Form in the way requested.
2. With documents mentioned above, entrants should also
submit the following documents:
1) The Application Form should be signed by the entrant
himself or herself in longhand in pen; if there is an author group, one of them
should be entrusted with the task of signing the form.
2) The author should sign the Commitment Letter of
Entrants himself or herself; if there is an author group, all the authors should
sign.
3) The entries will be disqualified if entrants fail to
submit the documents requested by the first and second items in article
V.
3. Entries should also meet the following
requirements:
1) The entries should be original works which have not been published or
performed in any way, and are not public works.
2) The entries should embody the Expo concept of
“understanding, communication, gathering and co-operation” and the theme of the
World Expo 2010 Shanghai China “Better City, Better Life”, as well as the spirit
of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China “Technology Expo, Ecology Expo, Art Expo
and Humanity Expo”.
3) There is no restriction on the types, styles and forms
of the songs, but they should be suitable for being accepted and broadcast
around the world.
4) The entries should be in accordance with the demands
of social moral conventions.
4. Entrants can obtain the rules, Application Form and
Commitment Letter of Entrants in the following ways:
1) By downloading from the official website of the World
Expo 2010 Shanghai China. Website: www.expo2010china.com;
2) By sending an email request to song@expo2010china.com.
Staff members of the Theme Song Collection Office will help to obtain the
documents mentioned above.
VI. Notice of limited responsibility
None of the entries (including audio and written
materials) received by the office or the documents mentioned by rule V will be
returned. The Theme Song Collection Office will not take responsibility for
entries being lost, damaged, results of mailing delays, loss or damage,
incorrect mailing, lack of proper postage, theft or other factors beyond the
control of the office.
VII. Intellectual property rights
The property rights of the entries are protected by
relevant Chinese laws. When entries are choosen in this selection, the copyright
and other intellectual property rights of the entries shall belong to the Bureau
of Shanghai World Expo Co-ordination, but entrants only enjoy the right to affix
their signatures.
VIII. Judging
The Theme Song Collection lasts for five years from
December 3, 2003 to December, 2008. Every year there will be 10 songs and 10
lyrics selected, one of which will be appraised as the year’s best. During the
five years, a total of 50 songs will be selected and five of them will be the
best annual works. In the end, experts and the public will select the final
theme song for the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
To guarantee publicization, justice and equity, the whole
process of submission will be notarized by the Shanghai Notary Public
Office.
The 2004 Solicitation & Collection is composed of
first round, second round and final judging. The judges of different phases will
all be well-known composers, professional lyrics writers, singers, music
producers, music educators and well-known music critics selected and appointed
by the Theme Song Collection Office.
IX. Prizes
Each of the selected lyrics (10 each year): RMB2,000 and
a certificate.
Each selected song (10 each year): RMB8,000 and a
certificate.
The Best Song each year (1 each year): RMB30,000 and a
certificate.
The Theme Song of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China
(only 1): RMB150,000 and a certificate.
All the prizes mentioned above are gross figures, prior
to the payment of relevant taxes. All winners should pay taxes on their winnings
according to the laws and regulations of their country or
region.
The prizes mentioned above will be awarded after
publicization. The prizes will be awarded to the entries, and distributed by the
authors themselves.
After the publication of the result, the Theme Song
Collection Office will publicize the winner list on the Expo
website.
