I. Market development of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China launched

The Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination compiled the “General Market Development Planning of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China ” (the Plan) in 2005, which covers 5 projects: corporate sponsorship, licensed product management, activities and event management, tourists organization and commercial services inside the Expo park. With the implementation of the Plan, the organizers, participants and visitors of the Expo can get reliable service and support, and the enterprises can also have multiple channels to participate in the Expo, regardless of their business type, scale or ownership.

The timetable of the Plan is as follows: the recruitment of corporate sponsors will be completed in 2007, cooperation with and services for sponsors starts from 2006 and ends at 2010; the recruitment of domestic and overseas licensed product producers will start in 2006 and 2007 respectively, and the business of licensed product will continue till end of 2010; activities and event management are from 2006 to end of October, 2010; tourists organization will be launched in 2008 and end at the end of October 2010; the recruitment of commercial service providers inside the Expo park will be launched in 2008, with the preparation period from July 2009 to April 2010 and the business term from May to October 2010.

The sponsorship is divided into two levels: partner and senior sponsor. As the highest sponsor, a partner not only provides capital and in-kind support, but also cooperates with the Organizer in its own business sector in the preparation for Expo 2010. The requirements and return for a senior sponsor are lower than those for a partner.

The Organizer will ensure that each sponsor gets sufficient rights and benefits commensurate with its sponsorship investment. All sponsors can enjoy returns from exclusive use of name and logo, exclusive commercial rights, priority in event sponsorship, ticket discount, and Expo 2010 on-site reception as well as services provided by the Organizer.

Expo Partners are estimated to be 10 to 15, while senior sponsors of 12 to 20.

According to relevant regulations of the Ministry of Finance and the State Administration of Taxation, sponsors for the Expo can enjoy preferential taxation.

The area for Expo Shanghai is located at Nanpu Bridge–Lupu Bridge region along both sides of the Huangpu River. The total planned area inside the red line amounts to 5.28 km2, with 1.4 km2 for coordination area. The section of Huangpu River within the planned area is 8.3 km long. Land lots such as the “backshore” will seize the opportunity to be reconstructed to a new waterside sightseeing spot.

The planning of Expo 2010 lends itself to the sufficient presentation of the theme “City of Harmony” and the concept of  “Harmonious Society” in the 21st century. Its planning principles can be summarized as follows: guided by the scientific concept of development, the Expo should convey the essence of Chinese culture and the philosophy of harmony, encourage nation-wide participation and enhance efficiency so that it can become an outstanding example of a harmonious city; the Expo should combine scientific innovation with the renovation of historic buildings as well as the preservation of cultural heritage, so as to make it an eco-friendly event with scientific innovations and cultural connotations; the Expo should focus on human-centered development.

It is estimated that a total of 70 million people will visit the Expo 2010, 400,000 visits per day on average, 600,000 visits on a peak day. Calculated by 8 square meters per person at an average visiting day, the enclosed area of Shanghai World Expo is 3.22 km2. Thereinto, 29% for pavilion and public activity spaces (92 hectares), 6% for service supporting facilities (20 hectares), 49% for green land and squares (159 hectares) and 16% for roads (51 hectares).

The total floorage of pavilions will be controlled between 800,000 to 900,000 square meters. The enclosed area also has a floorage of 125,000 square meters for public activity spaces and a floorage of 260, 000 square meters for service supporting facilities. The total floorage of the enclosed area is 1.25 million square meters.

Located inside the red building lines, Jiangnan Shipyard is of high historical value as it served as a cradle of China’s national industry. There are 6 buildings on the list of Excellent Modern Architecture, including one historical and cultural building under municipal protection and one under district protection. The Plan takes into consideration not only the current industrial buildings but also the old ones with historical and cultural significance inside the Expo area in order to better reflect the history of the city. Take Jiangnan Shipyard as an example, its historic buildings and shipyard will be built into an enterprise pavilion. After the Expo, some workshops can continue to serve for exhibition, cultural and leisure purposes.

IV. Transport arrangement

Considering a total of 70 to 80 million visitors from different places will come within the span of 184 days, the Plan aims to build a comprehensive modern transport system and improve the overall transportation capacity of Shanghai. Specific transportation schemes within the Expo site and the larger city will be work out based on the average flow of 400,000 to 600, 000 visitors per day.

First, arrival at the Expo Park. Close traffic connections between Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta, the whole country and even the world will be established by leveraging large capacity transportation tools such as airports, passenger ports, inter-city transportation and coach network, so as to provide convenient, safe, highly efficient and economical transportation choices.

Second, connection between inside and outside of the Expo Park. Flexible entrances including on-the-ground visitors entrance, waterway entrance and logistics entrance are adopted.

Third, transportation inside the Expo Park. By putting people first, different trip packages will be designed to meet the demand of different visitors, including one-day, two-day and three-day packages.  The routes, distribution of pavilions, supporting facilities and landscape design shall be coordinated with the aim of building a beautiful, efficient, and safe Expo Park and delivering pleasant, convenient and comfortable Expo experience to every visitor.
