The first large-sized tunnel shield "Eagle 2" with leading design and manufacturing by Shanghai No. 2 Municipal Engineering Co., Ltd. of Shanghai Urban Construction finally came out of the river tunnel in Xizang Road South at the west side of the Huangpu River, signaling the first run through of the East Line of Expo Shanghai special tunnel. The project of crossing river tunnel in South Xizang Road is located in the designated area of Expo Site, between Lupu Bridge and Nanpu Bridge. The passenger flow of the tunnel after finishing is designed at 60 to 70 thousand per hour, reaching the high requirement. The tunnel starts from the intersection of Xizang Road South and Zhongshan Road South to Southeastward covering a distance of 2.67km, with 1,170m under the river and a diameter of 11.58m, and finishes at the intersection of South Pudong Road and Gaoke Road West. The tunnel will be opened to the public after the completion of Expo Shanghai and become another main passage connecting South and North of the city across the river.
