  Rationale

Theme

The site, currently cramped with old industrial facilities and run-down residential quarters, has been waiting its turn for regeneration for decades. The Expo will not only give the area a complete facelift, but also turn it into a pilot for new urban living, a firm testament to the very theme of Expo 2010: "Better City, Better Life."

Transport

The site is close to Shanghai's downtown and is easily accessible by various means of transport. Existing downtown facilities can readily serve visitors to the Expo.

Industrial restructuring

The old industries, such as the shipyards and steel plants now on the site, will be moved to the urban periphery. After the Expo, the site will be used mainly by the tertiary sector. This fits perfectly into the city's industrial restructuring strategy.

After-use

The after-use of the site is a key component of the Huangpu Riverside Regeneration Program and will thus receive sufficient political and financial support
