  Types of Pavilions
  • Type I: Pavilions designed and built by official participants.

Land parcels will be provided free to participants. The parcels are measured in units, with one unit being 500 square metres. A participant may apply for 2 to 12 units, i.e. 1,000 square metres to 6,000 square metres.

Applications for land parcels must be submitted no later than 30 months before the opening of the Expo. All structures must be dismantled and the land cleaned up to its original condition before being handed back to the organiser by May 1, 2011.

  • Notes:

1) The footprint of pavilions should cover between 60 percent and 80 percent of the allocated land parcel.

2) The height limit of Type 1 pavilions is 20 metres.

3) Individual participants may decide whether to build a mezzanine or multiple floors within Type 1 pavilions, based on actual needs.

4) All Type 1 pavilions will be provisional structures. However, the construction of pavilions with transformable structures and that are able to accommodate alternative uses on the same or other locations are encouraged.

  • Type II: Stand-alone pavilion structures built by the organiser and rented to participants.

Pavilions in this category will be available in three sizes: one unit (500 square metres), two units (1,000 square metres) and four units (2,000 square metres). An outdoor space equal to 8 percent of the floor area will be supplied free to each participant.

Applications for pavilion space should be submitted no later than 30 months before the opening of the Expo. All exhibitions should be removed and the pavilion space handed back to the organiser by December 31, 2010.

Rental: Up to 2 units, 4,100 yuan a square metre, 4 units 3,900 yuan a square metre.

BIE member states will be entitled to a discount of 15 percent on rental costs.

  • Type III: Joint pavilions constructed by the organiser, offering covered exhibition spaces to developing nations.

In principle, eligible participants will each get one unit (324 square metres in net exhibition space) and, under special circumstances, no more than two units (648 square metres) in the joint pavilion. The request for the one additional unit should be made in the form of a separate application and whether that is granted is based on the actual need of the applicant. Outdoor space will be provided to participants subject to the topographical features of the land.

Exhibition space should be available by November 1, 2009, or 30 months before to the opening of the Exposition, and must be returned to its original condition by November 30, 2010.
