Dr. Richard Hausmann, President and CEO of Siemens China, takes frequent
visits to Shanghai. Transrapid, Jin Mao Tower, Pudong International Airport,
Shanghai International Medical Zone -- these are all landmark projects to which
Siemens has made significant contributions. They symbolize for Dr. Hausmann this
dynamic city. In our interview he frankly speaks about his special feeling for
Shanghai. A feeling which got even stronger after Siemens became the Global
Partner of Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
Long-term Partnership, Shared Achievements
Siemens is one of the world's largest electrics and electronics companies and
is also one of the most famous and respected corporate citizens in China. Dr.
Hausmann told us that: "Siemens made its full commitment and support to
Shanghai's bid for the Expo 2010. This is not only because we have the long-term
partnership with World Expo, but more importantly due to a deep friendship built
on mutual trust between Siemens and China and in particular with Shanghai." The
history of Siemens' cooperation with China dates back to 1872. Over one hundred
years ago, Siemens started to deliver advanced products and innovative solutions
to China. So one could say that Siemens always has been a driving force of
China's modernization. Through that course over many years Siemens has become an
integral part of the Chinese economy. While as one of the largest cities in
China, Shanghai is a key strategic market for Siemens. Early in 1904, Siemens
set up in Shanghai the first China representative office, a key milestone of
Siemens in China.
Siemens has witnessed the tremendous changes that have taken place since
China's opening up and economic reform. The company is proud to be a reliable,
committed, and trustworthy partner in China's development. All business segments
of Siemens worldwide are active in China including Automation and Control,
Power, Transportation, Medical, Information and Communications, Lighting as well
as Household Appliances. China as a region within Siemens has quickly become the
cornerstone for its global business. To date, Siemens has established more than
70 operating companies and 60 regional offices in China. These offices are the
backbone of Siemens' regional marketing strategy and ensure that the company is
close to its customers to be able to respond quickly and efficiently to their
needs. With 43,000 highly qualified local staff, Siemens is one of the largest
employers amongst foreign invested enterprises in China. Among them, around
13,000 are in Shanghai, making Shanghai the largest overseas business location
of Siemens in terms of employees.
New strategy -- "Full Speed 2010"
According to Dr. Hausmann, by the end of Fiscal 2006, Siemens China has
successfully fulfilled its commitment to inject 10 billion RMB of new investment
into China, a mid-term target committed to in May 2004 when embracing the 100th
anniversary of its first office in China.
"Heading vigorously towards the future, Siemens China has carved an ambitious
strategy called 'Full speed 2010', which I personally announced in December
2006" Dr. Hausmann emphasized. According to the strategy, Siemens will make
follow-on investment of another RMB 10 billion in China before 2010 and increase
the number of local representative units to 100 offices. Siemens will broaden
its service network in China for closer contact with its customers. Its goal is
to double the revenue in China by 2010.
Innovation will be the key force that drives the "Full Speed 2010" strategy.
In an emerging market, Expo 2010 Shanghai China provides a unique platform for
Siemens innovation. Siemens will exercise a series of plans to further enrich
its R&D talent pool so as to pave a concrete foundation for the realization
of its ambitious targets in 2010. Dr. Hausmann believes: "the opportunity and
stage of Expo 2010 belongs to all the outstanding companies of strategic vision
in the world. I believe the partnership with Expo 2010 will help the company to
reach the goals set in its‘Full Speed 2010’strategy in China."

Serve Expo for Joint Brilliance
Expo 2010 is expected to attract approximately 70 million visitors from China
and abroad. As the host city and one of the world's most dynamic metropolises,
Shanghai therefore faces unprecedented development opportunities as well as big
challenges. A fast and efficient transportation system, intelligent building
technologies as well as proven and reliable healthcare services are, in
particular, crucial factors for a successful Expo 2010. As the Global Partner of
Expo 2010, Siemens is committed to offer cutting-edge technology in these areas
in order to provide most advanced and integrated solutions for Expo 2010.
Dr. Hausmann stressed: "Siemens is the very first multinational company to
independently become Expo 2010 Global Sponsorship Partner. This is a visible
sign of our strengthened commitment to Expo 2010 and deepened partnership with
China and Shanghai. As a reliable partner and responsible corporate citizen,
Siemens has been providing supports to many mega-events worldwide. Expo 2010
Shanghai China provides Siemens with a great development opportunity. We will
consolidate Siemens' global network of expertise and resources to help making
the shared vision of 'Better City, Better Life' a reality."
Down-to-earth for Perfection
Interview with Mr.Wu Yuhua, Vice President of Siemens China, General Manager
of Siemens Expo Program Center
"An excellent Constructor of a Socialist Course with Chinese
Characteristics", "Outstanding Talent and Contributor of Yangpu Knowledge and
Innovation-based District", these honorable titles belong to the interviewee --
Mr. Wu Yuhua, General Manager of Siemens Expo Program Center and Vice President
of Siemens China. But when we would like to learn more about these interesting
honors, our interviewee goes directly to the Expo topic, which obviously is what
he cares most for now and future.
Long History of Cooperation
Mr. Wu said: "The cooperation between Siemens and World Expo dates back to
the very first London Expo in 1851, namely the 'Great Exhibition of the Works of
Industry of All Nations'." Mid Nineteenth Century was the era of social
transition in UK. Trains and steamboats replaced carriages and sailboats. Plants
and chimneys were everywhere. Siemens at that time was only four years old. The
company committed itself to industrial modernization. Siemens at that time
contributed the most innovative alarm ring, chemical signal telegram, and other
technologies and products to the first World Expo. The company therefore
received the supreme prize of the World Expo -- "Council Medal".
The successful participation of Siemens at the London Expo kicked off a
long-term partnership between Siemens and World Expo. From 1851 to 2007, during
the time of 156 years, Siemens provided support and services to sixteen World
Expositions. As the Information and transportation partner for Hannover EXPO
2000, Siemens sponsored Shanghai Municipal Government to showcase the city's
sustainable development vision from 2030 -- 2070 in the "21st Century" theme
area, which attracted over five million visitors.
Win-win Platform
Speaking of Expo 2010 Shanghai China, Wu Yuhua, who was born in Shanghai and
was sent to Europe for study, has a somewhat special sense of intimacy. "I
myself am a enthusiastic advocate and promoter of Expo 2010." He smiles while
showing us his golden tie with crispy print of Expo 2010 logos.
According to Mr. Wu, Siemens started to support Shanghai for its bid to host
Expo 2010 early in 2001. In July 24 2006, Siemens officially announced its
establishment of "Siemens Expo Program Center". And Mr. Wu Yuhua was appointed
as the General Manager. "Perhaps it is pure coincidence, when I was assigned
back to Siemens China to establish the Siemens east China's business strategy
and government relation, EXPO bureau was the very first government office I
visited. And besides, my office phone extension is 2010. That was a clear
indication for my future goal. As a Siemens employee born in Shanghai, I share
the responsibility to help establish a win-win partnership between Siemens and
Expo Shanghai."
Mr. Wu tells us that Siemens is the first multi-national company to establish
a special organization, the Siemens Expo Program Center (SEPC), as dedicated
organization to support Shanghai with respect to all EXPO 2010 preparations. It
will play a major role in combining the company's global resources,
comprehensive expertise and proven technology solutions to place Siemens as an
experienced solution and technology partner for the World Expo 2010. Meanwhile,
the organization will help to fully exploit the local market to achieve Siemens
ambitious profitable growth targets worldwide.
New Chapter of Cooperation
On May 19th this year, Siemens officially became the very first multinational
company to independently become Global Partner of Expo 2010. As the head of
SEPC, Mr. Wu moderated the signing ceremony which was attended by Dr. Klaus
Wucherer, Member of the Corporate Executive Committee of Siemens AG and Dr.
Richard Hausmann, CEO of Siemens China. When he spoke of the issue, Mr. Wu could
not withhold his excitement: "This is a milestone, and is a perfect win-win
example between Siemens and Expo Bureau, as well as the successful cooperation
between Siemens China and Siemens AG. Great success as it is, we will face even
more challenging and complex tasks in future. We are well prepared take
down-to-earth steps and provide perfect support to make Expo 2010 a grand
success."
Wu Yuhua explained to the reporter that, as the Global Partner of Expo 2010
Shanghai China, Siemens is willing and interested to provide advanced
technologies, solutions, high quality products and services particularly in the
areas of rail transportation, building technology and healthcare.
-- Railway Transportation: The railway transportation will handle 50% of the
traffic for 70 million visitors during Expo 2010. A fast and convenient urban
railway transportation is vitally important for the success of Expo 2010.
Siemens offers outstanding technologies and innovative solutions in the fields
of maglev, metro, light rail, and other intelligent urban transportation areas.
The integrated turn-key solution will help to greatly upgrade Shanghai’s
transportation systems.
-- Building Technologies: One key feature of Siemens building technology is
environmental care and energy saving. The to-be-completed Wenyuan Building in
Tongji University adopted Siemens advanced building technologies and will become
a demonstrative project for the realization of an Eco-World Expo 2010. Siemens
is very glad to provide innovative building technologies to the pavilions and
buildings in Expo Park.
-- Healthcare: Healthcare is indispensable part to ensure a safe and smooth
Expo 2010. Siemens advanced medical equipments and diagnosis systems will enable
conceptual and technological healthcare support for Expo 2010, lively help to
depict the theme of "Better City, Better Life".
May 19th 2007 is a memorable day when Siemens became a family member of Expo
2010 Shanghai China. Over 470,000 Siemens employees in more than 190 nations and
regions will act as ambassadors to promote Expo 2010. As a good corporate
citizen, Siemens is fully committed to help presenting a "successful, exciting,
and unforgettable" Expo 2010, while making significant contributions to the
improvement of Shanghai's infrastructure and people's living standard.
